Doxycycline has been considered a safe broad-spectrum antibiotic for patients with renal failure. Although doxycycline possesses many of the metabolic properties of the tetracycline group, toxic blood levels usually do not occur because of the drug’s unique extrarenal route of excretion.
The safety of long-term doxycycline use (>3 months) has not been adequately studied. Because lower doses of doxycycline and minocycline (a related tetracycline) are frequently used for extended periods to treat acne, it has been presumed that long-term use of doxycycline at an adult dose of 100 mg/day is safe.
Common and Rare Side Effects bloating. constipation. cough. diarrhea. diarrhea, watery and severe, which may also be bloody. fever. hives, itching, puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, face, lips, or tongue. hives or welts, itching, or rash.
Serious side effects are rare and happen in less than 1 in 1,000 people. Call a doctor straight away if you get: bruising or bleeding you can’t explain (including nosebleeds), a sore throat, a high temperature (38C or above) and you feel tired or generally unwell – these can be signs of blood problems.
Drink a full glass of water with each dose. If your stomach becomes upset when you take doxycycline, you may take it with food or milk. However, taking doxycycline with milk or food may decrease the amount of medication absorbed from your stomach.Dec 15, 2017

The most commonly reported adverse events associated with the use of doxycycline are gastrointestinal symptoms and photosensitivity. Near the end of September, I started a 14 day course of Doxycyclin (the specific brand name was Cyclidox). 100mg twice a day, with lots of water, an hour before meals, as instructed.
